Police: Father arrested after one child found in dog cage, another naked outside-NBC news

In Tulsa, OK a man was arrested when police found him passed out in bed with a 3 year old boy locked outside naked and a 16 month old little girl inside locked in a kennel covered in feces. He had supposedly taken narcotic pain medicine, a muscle relaxant and anti-seizure medication with a beer. The mother was working at the time and was just getting home when the kids where being taken and the man being arrested.

I’m sorry but I think these parents deserved to have their kids taken away from them. To me it seems as if these kinds of things happen all the time. I swear people should take tests and get licenses to be parents.

Grave interruption: Building around a tomb in China-NBC news

As construction for a residential complex goes on there is a big pile of dirt in the middle of it. It seems to be a tomb Taiyuan, a part of China. What seems to have happened was that developers bought a cemetery and had paid the families of the deceased to relocate them. Everyone but one family did. The family is waiting for “the right time” to move and for a reason why developers chose that spot. The building is set to be finished in April of 2013.

I would be kind of mad if someone made me move a loved one form what is suppose to be there resting spot forever. I also think it is kind of funny how they are just building around this huge mountain of a tomb.

Woman sues Texas police department over ruptured breast implant-NBC news

On Oct. 28 2011 a Pantego police officer ruptured Rebecca Van Hooser’s breast when arresting her. She said he forcefully pushed her against the car and that caused her implant to burst. While she was screaming in pain the officer responded with “this isn’t supposed to be comfortable”. Due to the rapture she has had many surgeries and two hematomas and has to have a partial mastectomy, tissue transplant and a new implant.

This officer should have serious consequences. There’s a difference between doing your job and being inappropriate. I can just imagine how hard he must have pushed her to burst an implant. After this she still had to spend the night in jail.

The UpRight Sleeper May Be The Dumbest Invention Of The Year –Huffington Post

New Mexico’s Worldwide Comfort Solutions came up with this new invention to help people sleep on, say, a plane. It is like an adjustable neck brace that helps you sleep without having to lie down. It stops you from leaning from side to side or forward so you won’t have to bother your neighbor. The back draw is that it looks kind of weird.

I think this is one of those inventions I wish I had but would never get because I would feel embarrassed using it in front of people. If I were to get it I would just use it at home or with family. With all that said it is pretty cool.

Victoria’s Secret apologizes about American Indian outfit-

On Nov. 7th during the Victoria’s Secret Runway show, Karlie Kloss (model) wore a native inspired outfit that many found insulting. In “Native Appropriations” blog there was a long article on why it should have never happened and why it’s so offensive. The company made a public apology to anyone who was offended, that was not their intention at all. They will also cut that look from the broadcast set to date on Dec. 4th and from any marketing materials.

I honestly think it wasn’t such a big deal. I thought the outfit was so pretty. Then again I’m not native so I can’t relate to the people who were offended. If it was portrayed in a bad way to make Native American look bad then I would absolutely agree to pull the look out and the apology. I don’t think it was as big as they made it seem. If I were native I would kind of be ok with them using some costume articles in the show.

Chinese Couple, Wu Conghan and Wu Sognshi, Pose For Wedding Photos 88 Years After Marrying-Huffington Post

This couple from china who have been married for almost nine decades finally had the opportunity to take their wedding pictures. They are both over 100 years old and thanks to an initiative that was city-wide where photographers went around and took pictures of couples who never had the opportunity to take a wedding photo. At the time when they got married there weren’t many cameras available so a wedding photo was never taken.

This is so cute. It makes me feel happy that this couple is still together after all this time and it looks like they are very happy. It’s a perfect way to kind of memorialize their life together.

Missing Australian Toddler, Dante Berry, Found With Loyal Dog at His Side-Huffington Post

A two year old little boy wandered off from his home in Mildura, Australia. The good thing is that his loyal and trusting dog was at his side. When the parents realized that the little boy had gone off they immediately called authorities. There were over 100 people who came to help look for Dante, but he was nowhere to be found. The next morning a diaper with footprints was found a mile away from the states forest which is close by to Dante’s residence. When looking in the forest the pet, Dasher, came running toward the police and had them follow him to the little boy. He was in good shape considering he had no diaper and it had been storming all night. The German Shepard had been with the toddler all night and never left his sight.

I think this is an awesome story. It just shows how loyal dogs are to their pets. That is one of the reasons that dogs are my favorite ever. I love them and stories like this one make me love them even more. The little boy is lucky he had such an amazing pet.

'Gossip Girl' set for 2-hour finale on Dec. 17-MSN News

Yes, it is true..."Gossip Girl" is coming to an end. The CW network has made it official by announcing that the last episode of the show will December 17th in a two-hour finale. "Gossip Girl" has been on the network for a little bit over five years. The show is to have a look back at all the unforgettable moments of the show and will also include interviews with the cast and creators. During the finale, there will be a sneak peak of "The Carrie Diaries" which is an offshoot of "Sex and the City".

I was so sad to hear this. This is one of my favorite shows ever!! I read the books and got addicted to them. The books and shows are totally different but they are still good. I will definitely be watching on the 17th. I am excited for "The Carrie Diaries". I read the book and was hooked. While reading I hoped it would become a series, my wish came true and I’m a happy camper 

Chinese Child Severely Brain Damaged After Being Beaten By Teacher-Huffington Post

In a Chinese preschool in Guangzhou a preschool teacher beat a 4 year old little girl. There is footage of the teacher tossing the little girl to the ground and repeatedly kicks her. She then picks her up from the floor and drops her again. The little girl was knocked unconscious and later taken to the hospital. It’s a miracle that the little girl is still alive considering the brain damage she was left with. After two operations she can’t walk or talk. The teacher denies any wrongdoing but is being prosecuted.

I can’t believe how people could be so cruel to anyone let alone a little girl. I saw the video and it disgusts me. I seriously teared up. The little girl couldn’t even defend herself; she looked lifeless after the first time she was pushed. What amazes me is that there were other people walking around too and they didn’t do anything about it. There is even a little boy playing with a ball that stopped and just starred at all that was happening. I just don’t get it.

Student nurse allegedly kills patient; put coffee in IV by mistake-MSN

Rejane Moreira Telles, a nursing student in Brazil, is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter for injecting an 80 year old patient with coffee by mistake on an IV drip. The patient died hours after the incident. The student said she only had several days of experience while working in the Rio de Janeiro hospital when she hooked up a drip that contained coffee and milk. She defended herself on Brazilian TV by saying, "anyone can get confused." Doctors contacted by the TV station said the coffee would have made the patient feel as if they were suffocating.

How do you confuse IV with coffee, it’s a totally different color. I am nowhere near of being a doctor and I know what IV is not supposed to look like. I am glad I don’t live anywhere near this hospital. I feel bad for the patient. It must have felt horrible to die that way.

Police say Louisiana woman set herself ablaze-MSN

A spokesman for Louisiana's Franklin Parish sheriff's office said Sharmeka Moffitt made up a story about being set on fire. Spokesman Kevin Cobb told reporters this afternoon that it looks like the 20-year-old woman set herself on fire on Sunday night. She is still in critical condition at a hospital in Shreveport, La. Police uncovered evidence that indicate Moffitt wrote "KKK" and a racial slur on her car. She had said she was attacked by three men wearing white hoodies.

I think this woman is crazy. She probably wanted to prove some kind of point but to almost kill yourself is going way too far.

Skydiver breaks sound barrier-NBC News

On Oct. 14, 2012, Felix Baumgartner jumped from 128,000 ft. over Roswell, NM. Felix’s is Austrian who has been training for about 7 years. He was helped by Joe Kittinger who held the 19-mile high jump, before Felix’s jump. It took a little over 4 min to land safely to solid ground.

I wish I was brave enough to do this. I don’t know I would ever have the willpower to jump off from anyplace that is that high. I am not afraid of heights and even that is too high for me.

Giant Mysterious Eyeball Found on Florida Beach-National Geographic

A giant eyeball washed up on a beach in Florida and many are wondering what kind of sea life it came from. It was found by a beachcomber on Wednesday in Florida’s Pompano Beach. When found it was handed to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The eye was later sent to the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg, Fl. There, genetic testing will be done to figure out who the eye belonged to. What they think it came from now is a large fish like a swordfish, tuna or deep-water fish. There is some weigh in from marine biologists who don’t think it’s a fish eye because fish have the eyes imbedded in hard tissue. Squid eyes are also a though because they have soft tissue but because there seems to be some bone around the eye, they are ruled out.

This is so cool. If I were to have found the eye I don’t know if I would have given to them. I kind of would want to keep it. My conscience would get to me and I would end up giving it to them but not right away. I so want to know where it came from.

Sun Sentinel-Man dies after bug-eating contest in Deerfield Beach

A 32 year old man in west palm beach died after winning a bug eating contest. The prize was a python from a Ben Siegel Reptile Store. Once the contest was over the man claimed he wasn’t feeling so well and collapsed outside the store and later died. The store owner stated that the bugs are captive bred bugs where they are bred in sterile conditions.

It would suck to win a contest and then die. It didn’t seem like an easy contest fi you had to eat bugs, gross. All that hard work and then dying. He was not having a very good day.

MSN living-Boy: 'Grown-Ups Killed my Kitty'

A little boy in Utah wrote a letter to his local newspaper about how his cat was put to sleep. The boy had lost his cat and had been looking for it for two days. None of the neighbors had seen the cat, or so they said. The little boy’s father went to the animal shelter where he found him. They were closing up so he was instructed to come back the next day to pay the fee and he would get his cat back. The next day when the father went to the shelter he was told that the employee had forgotten to put a note saying the cat was claimed. The cat was then put down. The little boy later went to the shelter where he was given an apology and he forgave them.

I almost teared up while reading this story, it’s so sad. I would not be as understanding as he was. If it were my pet I don’t know what I would do. The shelter offered him a new cat, but he didn’t take it. How do they expect that a new cat would make everything better? It wasn’t just a cat; it was the little boy’s friend. Shelters should be more aware and attentive of things.

Huffington Post-David Siegel Email to Workers Threatens Layoffs If Obama Is Reelected

David Siegel, CEO and founder of Westgate resorts, sent an email to his coworkers saying why Romney should be elected. He went on to say that if the president was reelected it will “threaten your job” and that he “will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company.” The reason for any downsizing was the new taxes that the company would have to pay.

This is ridiculous. No one should have to follow the opinions of somebody else. No one should have to be forced to do something they don’t want to do. Personally, I would quit if my employer threaten me to vote for a certain person. It’s not that I like one candidate over the other it’s the mere fact that I am being forced to vote for one or I will lose my job. Some workers may not have the choice of quitting, which is wrong.

National Geographic-Slime Has Memory but No Brain

After some experimenting with a slim mold, scientists have discovered that it may be able to memorize where it has been. The slime leaves a trail of residue wherever it goes. This trail lets it know where it has been. The way it was tested was by placing the slime in a trap where it was supposed to find a sugar solution. It was able to find it in 120 hours. When the slime was put in the same trap but that was already coated with slime, it had a more difficult time finding the sugar solution. It could not trace where it had been. The slime does not have a brain and scientist say it uses externalized spatial memory.

It is weird to know that something that has no brain can memorize things. We tend to think of memorizing as using your brain and this slime can do the same without it. It makes me think of what other things things without a brain can do.

National Geographic-Tentacled, Carnivorous Plants Catapult Prey Into Traps

For many years a rare type of sundew, Drosera glanduliger, has puzzled scientist because of its two types of leafy things on it. The middle part of it, which is sticky, is normal for carnivorous plants but the second type of tentacle isn’t. Scientists were confused to what they were for and why they made a jerking movement. After some experiments, it was discovered that the tentacles actually catapult any bug into the sticky parts, that’s why it jerked all the time.

If I could have this plant I would, I love carnivorous plants, they’re so weird, in a good way. I had a Venus fly trap but it died. It is so weird how a plant eats bugs. It’s also cool how every part of the plant has its own function to how to survive.

National Geographic-Mars Curiosity Rover Finds Proof of Flowing Water—A First

The Mars rover Curiosity made a major science discovery, the proof of flowing water in Mars. Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA stated that rounded pebble and gravel near the rovers landing site proofs that there was once water in Mars. They have also learned that the water was present for millions of years. There are cut canyons and riverlike beds that could have only been made by running water. This brings promise of learning teh duration and nature of the water.

This is amazing. The first thing that came to mind was what if mars was like earth at one point. Who's to say that earth wont eventually evolve into a Mars type pf planet. The universe is so big and we all know old there is more to learn from it. Technology amazes me even more every day.

Huffington Post-13 Things We Can’t Do Without Google.

Its Google's 14th birthday and there are many things people can't so without Google. 1) Spell words. 2) Stalk people. 3) Find Our Way Around Town. 4) Remember Recipes. 5) Enjoy Ourselves At The Office. 6) Remember Celebs.7) Drive Ourselves Around. 8) Figure Out Movie Times. 9) Understand Other Languages. 10) Comprend the Idea of Debating. 11) Remember Famous Quotes. 12) Understand Unit Conversions. 13) Remember Definitions.

This is so true. I don’t know how I lived without Google. If I need to find anything or have a question I always Google it. I have it on my phone and iPod. I would be lost without it. Its genius!

Scientific American-Kids Gulp 7 Trillian Calories Per Year

According to studies done at Harvard School of Public Health, kids ages two to 19 drink around seven trillion calories per year. Money wise, it about 24 billion dollars a year in sugar sweetened drinks. With all of the types of drinks out there, the rise in childhood obesity is fast. In the U.S., 17 percent of children are obese and the sugary drinks aren't helping. Studies also suggest that obese children will have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease when adults. An upside is that if 64 calories are cut off a day it could help a great deal.

When I think of sugary drinks, soda isn't the only thing that comes to mind. Juices also have a lot of sugar in them. I used to drink a lot of soda all the time. I have cut down to a can a day and sometimes, I try not to drink any at all. Kids, especially need to drink more water, it so much better for them and if that’s all that is around, it'll be easier for them.

Womb with a View: Labor inside an MRI Scanner Reveals the Mechanics of Childbirth from Scientific American

The article was about how a German woman gave birth to her baby in an MRI scanner. The scanner was adjusted for birth. It had to have enough room for the mother and the obstetrician took out all metals of the equipments used and there were sheets laid out for the extra fluid. The mother wore earmuffs to block out the nose. As the baby was coming out the machine was shut off to prevent any ear damage to the baby. The images were a little bit distorted because of all the movement but it was able to capture some good ones. The images show as the baby is going through the birth canal and the before and after the afterbirth comes out. Researchers could see as the muscles contort and how the fetus rotates as it comes out. They don’t recommend it for every birth but it does give insight on what can go wrong when there is and obstruction during labor.

I think this is so cool. The pictures shown on the site are so weird. I wish there were more than just the three pics. Every day I am more amazed at how far technology has come and all that it has to offer. If there is a way in the future, which I bet there will be, to have births monitored like this it could save a lot of babies or mothers who have complications during childbirth and actually see what is going on.

How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character from Mother Jones

This article was short and to the point. It states that kids who end up being successful in life aren’t the ones with helicopter parents. Kuman and other educational things given to kids while young aren’t the answer either. What makes a child a successful adult is hardship. Learning young about disappointment builds “character traits like persistence, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control” which make them better.

I think this makes perfect sense. If a parent is constantly protecting a child and solving their problems then they will never know how to function by themselves. A lot of successful people didn’t come from great families. They had hardships and surpassed them.

Venom from the Banana Spider Could Be the New Viagra-National Geographic

The symptoms of being bitten by the Banana Spider (Phoneutria nigriventer), are tremors, shortness of breath and a painful erection. Its bite has been known to kill people. Researchers got to thinking when they realized that the bite caused priapism, or prolonged erection, that can be harmful to the male genitalia. If it caused an erection, maybe it could be used to help men with erectile dysfunction (ED). Tests were done with rodents that have ED and it worked on them. What it does is release nitric oxide which boosts circulation in male genitals and makes them have an erection. This toxin, PnTx2-6, can help men that don’t respond to Viagra or other types of medications.

I started to think of how the world itself has the solution to medical problems. Yes some science is needed to help but the solution wasn’t in nature itself. This means that the cure for many diseases may be out there in spiders or other types of things. Spiders do have a purpose in life

New iPhone 5 Feature-The New Yorker

Apple came out stating that the iPhone 5 will have a new feature that would be make it amazing. The new feature that it will have will be empathy. Supposedly, C.E.O. Tim Cook, “…believe that the iPhone 5 will make current relationships obsolete.” It’s said that it could easily take the place of an existing boyfriend.

I think this is funny. I guess people want their phone to be a person. I know I would be lost without my phone but I don’t need it to be my therapist. If people actually do depend on their phone for everything, including a pep talk, it’s sad. People need other people to socialize and to not end up crazy and alone.

Drought to Continue in Plains and Rockies, Though Storm Did Bring Relief to Some Areas from The New York Times

According to The National Weather Service, “The worst drought in decades is expected, over the next few months” in the Plain and Rockies areas. Much of the central and southern plains have been suffering from very hot three digit temperatures and a lack of rain. Regions from South Dakota to Texas are moving to a drier time of year which is only going to make it worse. Hurricane Isaac’s rain did help bring some rain and moisture to some areas but not enough. Stream flow of many levels have gone back to normal after being way below regular levels in July. Even in areas where there was some rain, it was too late for crops.

I think it’s so weird how last year we had an abundance of water and this year there’s nothing. I have a friend who is a farmer and said that in the two acres they harvested, there were only about 18 bushels were it is usually about 180 bushels. It was a big depressor. I hope that the wheat planting will be better in the winter.

Artificial Limbs Controlled by Thoughts from Scientific American

Hopefully by 2014 at the world cup I Brazil we will all be able to see a great experiment that has been in the works for awhile. It is a suit that will be able to control the movements of a paralyzed person. It is a computer that is controlled by brain waves. It has been tested on robotic arms and computer cursors so the suit is in works now. The brain is responsible of sending motor signals that are transmitted wirelessly to a computer that is on the back of the suit. There the computer will translate the signals to motor commands so the patient will be stable. After that, the patient will just have to visualize a movement and the robotic suit will move the body to do it.

This is a great invention. If it is made properly and works it will be a miracle for many paralyzed individuals. Technology is moving fast and it’s great to hear that it’s paying off. This invention will change the lives of many.
